Good Dog SA Week 2007
02 Jul 2007
Good Dog SA launched on Monday 25th of June in Rundle Mall. Lunch time shoppers were thrilled to watch and enjoy the antics of friendly pooches and their owners.
Free face painting and dog balloons delighted children and adults alike, along with ‘Good Dog’ the giant blue mascot. ‘Good Dog’ spent his week dancing through Rundle Mall and was a firm favourite with the children!
Well known radio identity and popular MC Paul Curren introduced celebrities and their furry friends including, McLeod's Daughters favorite, Luke Jacobz' who willingly took care of 'Radar' a very friendly Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Luke loved him so much that he's now looking to purchase a 'staffy' himself. Luke will share his search and adventures, for a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, online at gooddogSA.com in the coming months. Watch out for that!
Other celebrities included: Corey Wingard (Network 10) with dog "Barry" (after Barry Hall), Melody Horrill (Network 7) and dog "Fred", David Cooper (Adelaide 36ers) with "Buster", Nicki Barnet (Network 10) and "Charlize", Leith Forrest (Adelaide Advertiser) and "Chaser", Cosi (TripleM) and "Maggie", Dale Lewis (SAFM) with "Diesel" and Troy Gray (Channel 9) with Guide Dog in training "little Troy". Chad Cornes’ mother Pam Phillis also attended with her “dog-son”, "Gomez".
Representing Premier Mike Rann at the launch was Vini Ciccarello, Member for Norwood who was teamed with long-haired Daschand, "Cricket". Other invited guests at the launch included Mayor Ivan Brooks from the City of Mitcham, Mayor Felicity-ann Lewis of Marion Council and a number of local Council members. Special guests and members of the public enjoyed canine cupcakes and human dog biscuits.
Over the course of the week, people were encouraged to utilize the GoodDogSA.com website at the interactive display in Rundle Mall. This quickly became a very popular opportunity for many of those watching and enjoying the displays over the week long period to experience the website. With Good Dog helpers and members of local Councils on hand to guide people through the website and answer questions on responsible dog ownership, it quickly became the hub activity in Rundle Mall.
In addition to the interactive display, people were also entertained and informed by a variety of dog displays including Delta Dogs who provided dog displays and made available their expert trainers to answer all sorts of questions and queries. The Animal Welfare League were offering information on dogs for adoption and this display proved very popular, with a number of dogs managing to find new homes during that week.
The crowd favourite and one that always pulled at the heart strings were the gorgeous puppies – everyone delighted in their antics and never ending bundles of energy!

- Teach your child to interact appropriately with dogs and not to 'play-fight' or play 'tug-of-war' games with them. Dogs can get overexcited or frightened if there is a lot of noise. So put your dog out of the way when children are playing loud games and running around.
- Teach your dog to sit before you allow visitors to stroke it. Allowing it to jump up on people may frighten or annoy them, and children may feel very intimidated by the dog’s behaviour.
- If you see a dog with its owner, always ask the owner for permission to pat the dog. Allow the dog to sniff the back of your hand first. If it is happy to be patted, it will sniff your hand and move towards you. You can then stroke the dog under its chin.
- Take your dog to puppy pre-school or dog obedience school. It is very important for dogs, in particular puppies, to be socialised with other dogs and people. Remember - if your dog is trained and issued with a training certificate, you will receive a rebate on your dog registration fee.
- Dogs can be scared by sudden disturbances. Scared dogs may bite. Always call the dog first so that you do not surprise it. Do not go near any dog when it is eating its meal or chewing a bone, especially if you do not know the dog. If you approach, the dog may bite to defend its food.
